Philip Jones

Born in 1933, Philip Jones was a noted British abstract painter. He  enrolled at he Slade School in 1953 where his tutors included Tom Monnington and William Coldstream; he was encouraged also by Lucien Freud who purchased one of his works. His abstract painting reflects his love of the rural whether that is the open vistas of North Norfolk  or one of the many more exotic locations in India, Malta, Greece or the Gambia.   He loved working in coastal areas where he could explore the relationship between the edge of the known landscape and waterside.  Many of his abstracts distill this relationship  in patterns of movement such as coastal pathways or the edge of plantations -

He exhibited regularly at Royal Academy and has work in the National Museum of

Wales.
