Alexander Mackenzie

Born in Liverpool in 1923, Mackenzie could not attend art college until 1948, after War Service.  However, in 1951he graduated and moved directly to join the St Ives community in Cornwall. He enthusiastically embraced the Modernist artistic community becoming a member of the Penwith Society by 1952 and joining the Newlyn Society of Art in 1956.  

By 1957 this lead to Waddington Galleries in London taking him on and following him with three one-man exhibitions. He was successful in America and in 1997 and 2007 his work was championed by retrospective shows at Austin Desmond. He was a noted champion of the St Ives group and his work is now held by the Tate Gallery.
