Ann Winn, who died in 2015 at the age of 84, was an instinctive colourist with formidable command of her chosen media, whether oil, watercolour, gouache, pastel or ink. She trained at the Slade School and her essential subjects were the landscape and the interior, which she could simplify to the point of abstraction whilst indulging her delight in ornament, pattern and decoration. She worked both on the spot and in the studio capturing images from her extensive travels to Greece, Turkey, and India. She has been described as a ‘Neo-romantic impressionist, with a touch of Bloomsbury at its best’ and a ‘latter-day fauve, unselfconscious in her debt to Matisse.
