‘The Water Meadow”
ROBERT BUHLER R.A. 1916-1989
Oil on canvas, 28 x 36 inches, signed.
Born to Swiss parents in London, Robert Buhler studied abroad in Basel and then at St Martins followed by the Royal College of Art. He found a cohort of like minded painters in Lawrence Gowing, Carel Weight, Roland Pitchforth and Roger de Grey - often sharing exhibitions with them in London at dealers such as Agnews. His trademark oils show a spare style with a controlled, contained palette, paint is built up in fine thin layers. Here his soft light plays over the water meadows, binding the geometry of the composition, where blocks of colour offset the diagrammatic lines. Buhler held teaching positions in London and was a member of the NEAC, The London Group and the Royal Academy with paintings in many public collections.
