Dame Ethel Walker A.R.A. 1801-1951
Oil on canvas, 24 x 20 ins, signed.
Dame Ethel Walker was a dynamic female painter of the early twentieth century; she studied at both the Westminster and Slade Schools, taking extra tuition with Sickert. She travelled in France and Spain and adopted a light-filled Impressionist touch which she brought to her work; she loved to paint seascapes and still life - often flower studies, but she is also known as a sensitive portraitist and painter of the female figure.
Over one hundred works are now held in our public collections: this example is very close in style to "Flowerpiece No 4" Courtauld Gallery, 'Flowers in a Jug' at The Tate Gallery and 'Bouquet of Flowers" Machester Art Gallery - all dating to the 1930s.
