Born in Aberdeen, John Semmence won a scholarship to study in Rome, and then moved on to work in Paris, returning to Britain in 1957. He maintained a career as an art teacher but showed regularly with the United Artists Group, also with the Royal Scottish Academy, the New English Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. His paintings delight in the use of silhouettes, light and shadow, being effective in landscapes, townscapes and interiors. His work was given solo exhibitions at the Commonwealth Institute, the Edinburgh Festival and the Mall Galleries.
